With nearly six decades of uninterrupted production and over ten million units sold in the United States, the Ford Mustang is as much a cultural icon as it is a car. For Carrol Shelby, however, the Ford Mustang still had room to grow. Having already created a working relationship with Ford while converting the AC Ace into the Shelby Cobra, Shelby American already had both an intimate knowledge of the Ford Windsor V8 and a supplier for engines and parts. The 289 small bock was an excellent fit for the GT350, keeping weight down and providing ample power over the stock Mustang, but Shelby American had their sights set higher. The GT500 was powered by a 7.0L Ford FE 427 engine producing 360 horsepower, completely changing the perception of what a Pony Car could do.

This 1968 Shelby GT500 Convertible is an excellent example, featuring a power-retractable convertible roof, power steering, and power disc brakes. It was equipped with the optional Selectomatic 3-speed automatic transmission which shifts beautifully. The red and white exterior over black upholstery is a striking and classic color combination guaranteed to turn heads wherever it goes. The 7.0L Ford FE V8 runs beautifully with 360 horsepower on tap whenever the mood suits. This GT500 reminds us all why the Ford Mustang became such a cultural icon, and why Carol Shelby will forever be remembered as a motorsports legend.
