Mercedes Benz's AMG division has built a reputation around building high-performance luxury vehicles, unlike any other manufacturer. While BMW's M division or Audi's RS line seems to toe the line between power and usability, Mercedes AMG's are known as German muscle cars for a reason. The SL65 AMG, a two-seat roadster, raised the bar. With a hand-built 5.0L twin-turbocharged V12 engine producing a jaw-dropping 612 horsepower and 1,000 nm of torque (737.5 lb-ft), the SL65 AMG was the world's highest-powered and highest-torque roadster of all time. It would accelerate to 60 miles per hour in 3.6 seconds according to Road and Track and, with the removal of the electronic limiter, would reach an eye-watering top speed of 215 miles per hour. Mercedes did not make a muscle car with the SL65; they made a rocket ship.

This 2006 Mercedes Benz SL65 AMG is finished in black over a gray interior with contrasting dark burl wood inlays. The sleek, understated, timeless combination perfectly suits such a performance-oriented luxury roadster. It is well-optioned, with massaging seats and fully automated climate control. This SL65 AMG drives beautifully, perfectly showcasing the dual personality these cars are well-known for. The 612 horsepower V12 is smooth and quiet in traffic but quickly roars to life with the press of the accelerator. Very few cars are as comfortable and capable of storming down the autobahn, flying through back roads, and luxuriously cruising around town.
