2008 Ducati 1098 S
After facing slow sales of the 999, Ducati returned to its styling roots with the 1098. While the 999 was praised for its performance and handling, design and styling left many would-be owners unable to justify its hefty price tag. Though it excelled on track, the Ducati 999 simply was not a popular bike for road-going customers. In 2007, with the introduction of the 1098, that all changed. The new 1098 design was a modern, aggressive design that managed to stay true to the traditional styling of the 916 and 998. With a more palatable price tag than the 999, the 1098 would have been a massive success on looks and affordability alone, but Ducati was not interested in resting on the performance laurels of the 999. The new Testastretta Evoluzione 1099cc V-twin engine produced a robust 160 horsepower and 90 lb-ft of torque, a massive improvement over the outgoing 999. The Ducati 1098 managed to outperform every other 1000cc sports bike in both acceleration and the quarter mile, but its handling was equally phenomenal. The 1098 S came equipped with a top-shelf, track-oriented Öhlins suspension (including an Öhlins steering damper), Pirelli Diablo Corsa Pro tires, Brembo brakes, lighter Marchesini wheels and a carbon fiber Termignoni exhaust system. The result is an even more potent version of the base 1098 that feels at home on the race track.
